Carpet cleaning in Ghana has some unique challenges that the standard advice you read online — designed for temperate climates — doesn't address. Red laterite soil, harmattan dust, and high humidity all affect how carpets should be cleaned and how often. Here's the full picture.
Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning: Which Is Right for Ghana?
Steam Cleaning (Hot Water Extraction)
The most thorough method. Hot water and cleaning solution are injected into carpet fibres under pressure, then extracted along with dislodged dirt, bacteria, and allergens. Water temperature is typically 80–100°C, which kills dust mites effectively — an important factor in Ghana's warm climate where dust mite populations are high.
Best for: Annual deep clean, heavily soiled carpets, dust mite and allergen removal, laterite stain treatment.
Drying time: 4–6 hours in Accra's humidity. Run ceiling fans and open windows to speed drying.
Dry Cleaning
A dry compound is applied to the carpet, worked into fibres with a brush, and vacuumed out along with the loosened dirt. Minimal moisture means fast drying (30–60 minutes), making it ideal when you need the space back quickly.
Best for: Maintenance cleans, commercial/office carpets, Airbnb turnovers, delicate fibres.
Limitation: Doesn't achieve the same depth of cleaning as steam for heavily soiled carpets.
Removing Red Laterite Soil from Carpets
This is one of the most common carpet problems in Accra — and one of the hardest to solve with standard cleaning. Red laterite soil (the characteristic iron-rich clay of southern Ghana) contains iron oxide that bonds chemically to carpet fibres when it dries. General carpet cleaning products designed for mud or general dirt don't break this bond.
We use specialist pre-treatment solutions formulated for iron-oxide staining before the main clean. Results depend on how long the stain has been set and the carpet fibre type — wool and polypropylene respond very differently. Most laterite stains treated within a few weeks of occurring can be fully removed. Older set-in stains may be significantly lightened but not always fully eliminated.
