Steam extraction is the only method that effectively removes embedded harmattan particles from fabric surfaces. This is why a post-harmattan steam clean every March or April is the most important cleaning event of the year for Accra homes with carpets.
Accra's red laterite clay is tracked into homes constantly — from unpaved roads, compound areas, and construction sites. When laterite dries in carpet fibres, the iron oxide bonds to the material in a way that standard cleaning cannot break. Steam cleaning uses pressurised water vapour at temperatures above 100°C to clean and sanitise surfaces. The heat kills bacteria, dust mites, and mold spores on contact — without any chemicals. A steam cleaning machine heats water to produce high-pressure steam that penetrates fabric fibres, tile grout, and upholstery weave, loosening dirt and destroying pathogens. After steam treatment, a wet-vac extraction removes the loosened debris and moisture.
Most carpets and upholstery fabrics are steam-safe. Exceptions include certain delicate natural fibres like silk and some antique rugs. We assess your carpet or sofa material before starting and confirm it's suitable for steam treatment. If steam isn't appropriate, we use alternative hot-water extraction or dry-cleaning methods.
In Accra's warm climate, steam-cleaned carpets typically dry within 2–4 hours with windows open or fans running. Upholstery dries slightly faster — 1–3 hours. We recommend not walking on carpets until dry. In harmattan season when humidity is very low, drying times are faster than during the rainy season.
Yes, with pre-treatment. Red laterite soil (the iron oxide clay common in Accra) bonds to carpet fibres and requires a specialist pre-treatment solution before steam extraction. Applying steam directly to dried laterite without pre-treatment can set the stain. We always pre-treat laterite stains before extraction.
At minimum annually. In homes with children, pets, or high foot traffic, every 6 months is better. During harmattan season, fine Sahara dust embeds into carpet pile beyond what vacuuming removes — a post-harmattan steam clean in March or April is the most important annual carpet clean.
